Saint Kentigern Halberg Junior Disability Sports Day

Saint Kentigern Halberg Junior Disability Sports Day

The Saint Kentigern Halberg Junior Disability Sports Day on 26 November again proved popular with Auckland primary school students with 80 students from 37 schools attending.

All the students were able to try out a range of accessible sports, including blind cricket, boccia, goalball, polybat, rowing, sitting volleyball, swish and wheelchair basketball. The running and wheelchair races were also a hit with all attendees.

The Saint Kentigern Halberg Junior Disability Sports Day is an important event in the Auckland disability sports calendar as it serves as a stepping stone for young athletes into disability sports. Many participants will go on to compete as part of the Auckland team at the Halberg Junior Disability Games.

Many of the young students attending in 2014 were inspired by fellow athlete Tupou Neiufi. The Sutton Park School student, who had a traumatic brain injury at two years old, is a talented swimmer and has been selected for Paralympics New Zealand's 'Pathway to Podium' programme. For the thirteen year old, attending this event was an opportunity not to be missed as it enabled her to try out some new sports and meet other physically disabled young people.
